I’ve had more than a few people ask me a lot of the logistics of how I produce this show, so I thought it might be helpful to share the details of how I put this thing together. I will say, it took me a shitload of time to figure out.

RECORDING

I use the Zoom H4n digital recorder to record all my interviews. I plug Behringer microphones (set of 3 is super cheap on Amazon) and those work fine for my purposes (don’t forget the XLR cables). I recently bought an MXL 990 and that’s a much higher quality mic…almost too good if you’re not in a soundproof place or don’t mind picking up every little noise. Also, buy a few basic tabletop mic stands.

To record phone calls or Skype conversations, a basic male-to-male aux cable like this is all you need. Plug one end into the “external mic” portion of the digital recorder and the other one into your phone or computer headphone jack. There are apps you can use for both iPhone and Android, and one I’ve used is called TapeACall. In this instance, both voices sound like a phone call, so if you want higher quality out of your own voice, best to go the digital recorder route.

EDITING

I use Adobe Audition to edit and mix all of my interviews, which you can get for a $20/month subscription. If – like me –  you have no idea how to use this, YouTube is a fabulous teacher, specifically this guy. It’s a steep learning curve but you can do so much more wth it than Garage Band. Worth every cent.

HOSTING AND iTUNES

In order to get the show on iTunes, I need to host my feed someplace, and iTunes accesses that feed. I use a free Google product called FeedBurner to host my feed, and make sure that feed is pulling the right information from my website where I host all the final episodes as mp3s. When you’re ready to submit to iTunes, itunesconnect.apple.com is where you do it. It took mine less than a day to get it approved though they say it can take up to a week I think.

WEB

My URL is hosted through BlueHost and the platform is WordPress, the theme is “Podcaster.” Not sure if I love it; it’s not super intuitive and I’m thinking of trading to SquareSpace but that sounds like way more time than I have right now.

MUSIC

Since you can’t really just use famous songs without permission, get your friends who are in a band to make a song for you or something.
